WISE (Web-Based Information Science Education) Consortium and ALISE Distance
Education SIG
This workshop is open to all interested conference attendees, especially
doctoral students. Knowledgeable presenters will address key issues in online
pedagogy in the context of library and information science education in a highly
participatory environment. In addition to contributing to discussion during the
panel sessions, participants will have the opportunity to join breakout groups
to discuss preparing online students for long-term professional success.

Welcome and Overview of Best Practices in Online Education
This introduction to the workshop will recognize ALISE Award recipients for WISE
Faculty of the Year 2008 and discussion of their best practices.

Stepping out of CMS: Student Communication Technologies Beyond the Course
Management System
Panel Presentation and Discussion of effective practices for instructor/student,
student/student, and student/instructor communication strategies outside the
context of the online course management system, as well as with the wider
community of LIS professionals, alumni and prospective students.

Communities
Panel Presentation and Discussion of student engagement in synchronous online
sessions and asynchronous on-demand faculty development.

Breakout Session: Preparing Students for Successful Careers
Breakout groups will discuss ideas and strategies for long-term student learning
and success as members of the LIS professional community.
